Are you an Early Childhood/Elementary Education major at Louisiana Tech University? If so, this page was created to provide you with resources and reminders that are included during advisement. Before you get started, make sure you have determined what you are using for a calendar AND where you are keeping notes that you will need regularly. If you need help selecting a calendar and note options, check out the following possibilities:

  • Calendar – Louisiana Tech provides you with a free Microsoft 365 and Google for Education account. I suggest using one of these resources for a calendar app (Outlook Calendar or Google Calendar). These can be accessed via apps on your phone as well as via a computer browser.
  • Notes – If you would like a page format for notetaking, you could use Word or Google Docs. If you pick, Word, make sure to use the cloud version (Microsoft 365) so you will have access anytime/anywhere. If you are more of a “sticky note” person, you might want to check out Google Keep.

Is this your first time advising? or maybe you recently transferred to the College of Education? Check out the below information to make sure you have the basics covered:

  • Find your advisor – Once you have found your advisor, record their name, email, and office number in your notes.
  • Sign-up for advising – Visit your advisor for their sign-up process for advising.  Make sure to save this link in your notes for future reference. If you are my advisee, please use my “You Can Book Me” Calendar. Once you have booked, you will have the option to add the appointment to your outlook or google calendar.
  • Plan of study – When you joined the College of Education, you should have received a plan of study according to your major such as Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education. The plan of study you are given when you first enroll as an education major is the one you use to guide your course registration each quarter through graduation. It has been created according to your major as well as when each course is offered. Do not deviate from the plan of study without approval from your advisor. This can cause a delay in graduation. Save a copy in your Google or One Drive and add a link to it in your notes.
  • Register for classes – After you have met with your advisor, it is time to register for classes. Make sure to register for the courses discussed with your advisor. If you end up needing to drop/add, you can find those directions on the register for classes page.
  • Issue registering for a course – If you are able to register for some classes, but have one (or two) that will not allow you to register, check out the common issues below:
    • Course restriction by major – Some courses offered are restricted to certain majors. One course could be offered in two versions: one open to all majors and others restricted. Check the course description in BOSS.
    • Course restriction by prerequisite – Some courses are restricted by a prerequisite such as a particular ACT score, previous course, or program (example: teaching program). Read the course description in the Racing Form or BOSS. If you do not find the issue, contact the registrar’s office at 318.257.2176
      and registrar@latech.edu

Teaching Program

Prior to your Sophomore year, you will need to be accepted into the teaching program. This allows you to register for the education courses (EDCI, SPED, EDU) you find on your plan of study for the Sophomore – Senior year. There are a variety of requirements for acceptance including GPA, courses, and standardized tests. Check out the Teaching Program application requirements during the FIRST quarter of your Freshman year. Add this information to your notes.

Once you have completed the application, submit it with the attached documentation to
Mr. Michael Gilmore, Undergraduate Support, College of Education, mwgil@latech.edu.

Practicum Courses

Practicum courses include several hours of clinical experience. Each quarter that you register for a practicum course, you will need to complete a Clinical Experience application. This provides the needed information for placement into schools prior to the quarter beginning.

Residency

Prior to your Senior year, you will apply for the residency program through the Clinical Residency & Recruitment Center (CRRC). Similar to the teaching program application requirements, you will be required to complete certain courses, GPA,  and standardized tests. As will the teaching program, you will want to have the requirements prior to your senior year. Make sure to stop by to visit our CRRC in person as well as online at the CRRC website.

Praxis

There are a variety of Praxis requirements prior to your year of residency. Below are some helpful resources for success on the Praxis tests:
